I have a decision to make.
Can I allow you into my life
with the understanding that we might never be
more than friends?
My mind quickly answers the question
in the affirmative
but my heart hesitates
only a little
but enough nevertheless
and lingers on the possibility
inherent in the word "might."
The question itself
it seems
is merely hypothetical.
At the present moment
you won't even allow me in your life.
But your coldness towards me makes it all the more urgent
and I realize that the answer must be
NO.
